Welcome to the Equipment Wish List page. Rather then sorting this page by types equipment, I'm going to sort it by lists for different projects/plans.

Audio Compressors

Essentially, audio compressors take the linear curve of the output levels (which can create distortion if too loud), and changes it to an exponential curve.

This means that quiet audio gets slightly amplifier, and loud audio is brought down to the specified output levels.

Most audio compressors have standard adjustable controls:

Threshold: The threshold is how much louder then the normal (specified) level the sound needs to be for the volume to be brought down.

Ratio: The ratio is how much to bring down the level (prevent the output from getting louder). For example, if the ratio is set for 6:1, the input signal will have to cross the threshold by 6 dB for the output level to increase by 1dB. If the ratio is infinite:1, then no matter how loud the input, the output will only increase by 1 dB.

Attack: The attack is the time that the loud audio needs to play for, before the volume is brought down. This is usually in milli-seconds.

Release: The release time is how long to wait after the loud sound, before bringing the quiet volume back up.

Output: The output is the gain level to output at. This is the maximum volume that your audio can reach. This would be set to the maximum volume we want throughout the school.

The 2 main companies that make products on the basic level are DBX and Behringer. Both have an offering available at Long & McQuade.

Behringer has the MDX2600 available, aimed more at vocals with extra features for vocals such as a de-esser (reduces whistling and feedback), and DBX has the 266XS, aimed more at music and instruments, featuring an expander gate. Both of the 2 models are 2 channel units, meaning we can either run multiple audio sources, or use it in a stereo configuration. There are other models, such as the 4 channel Behringer, but those don't offer attack and release time control. NEW! Long & McQuade also now offers the more advanced DBX compressor for $60 more, and is much better suited for vocals.

Hanging/Mounted Speakers for Market Square (or Cafeteria)

This would simplify most setups for assemblies or lunchtime events, and will improve the acoustics. It will also get louder then the current speaker system. Furthermore, the amplifier can be in the sound cart, or can be mounted in the amplifier rack in the cafeteria to serve both market square and the cafeteria. Having a separate amplifier will mean that we can use higher quality, larger, passive mixers.
